Project - Hylian Shield. Part 1.
Few relics in gaming history are more iconic than the Hylian shield. I thought about making some long winded metaphor of the shield being part of the tri-force itself, arguably the wisdom segment, as logically the wise protect themselves but then some quick research scuppered that plan when I realised Link is traditionally left handed, which would make the sword the left segment and it all fell apart from there.
Anyhoo, Hylian shield.
Iconic, visually striking, simple in overall design, intricate in detail.
Let's do this.
The shield has appeared in 5 main Zelda titles, and 8 non-Zelda games.
Since it's first appearance in Ocarina of Time, the general design of the shield has remained largely unchanged. a red Hylian Eagle crest prominently spread across the lower portion, holding aloft the the equally iconic Tri-force. The one major design revision is the removal of a fourth yellow triangle beneath the Eagle ( see below )
The removal of the fourth triangular element is said to have been a decision to remove confusion and rumor of a fourth corresponding Tri-Force element ( forming a Tetra-force), Which seems like a reasonable move to maintain Lore, but at the cost of some visual balance. the lesser instance of yellow in the lower portion of the shield adds some vibrancy to an otherwise quite dark design, that is perhaps unnecesary in later iterations as graphical capabilities allowed for higher resolutions and detail rendering.
For my shield I will be basing my imitation on a piece of concpet design for Twilight Princess shown below (found at History of Hyrule)
This helpfully shows some details of the back of the shield, specifically the handles and bracing. that are going to be infinitely helpful in constructing a functional prop. I will likely modify the central loop using the same thicker strap that I sed on both my Cap and my daughters Wonder Woman shields. the hand grip will use the same grip as my Cap shield allowing me to use an active or passive grip in use. adding a shoulder strap to wear in on my back will also be essential, simple buckles attached to the shield itself and we'll see what we figure out for the strap.
I've got the base of the shield cut and glued together.
The raised detail parts are cut and sanded ready to be glued on, but that is going to wait until I've figured out the grip/straps for the back I think.
More to come.
